State of the collection: November 2019

Happy Fountain Pen Day, dear reader! I hope today your ink flows smoothly, your nibs run straight and true, and your postman is weighed down with parcels!

For me, the last month has been heavy on the sales. I still have quite a few pens in my for-sale case, but I said a proper goodbye to a number of old friends:

  • Nakaya Decapod
  • Nakaya Long Cigar
  • Sailor Pro Gear Shumibun
  • Franklin-Christoph Model 02
  • Montblanc Rouge et Noir (gifted to my brother)

I also welcomed several beautiful new additions:

  • Montblanc Writer’s Edition Homer
  • Montegrappa Duetto Nero Uno (waiting for a new feed, so not pictured)
  • Pilot Custom Urushi
  • Schon Pocket Pen (not pictured, in my pocket!)
  • ASC Arco Bronze Gladiatore Medio (still incoming)
  • Pelikan M600 White Tortoise (still incoming)
  • Aurora Oceano Pacifico
  • Eureka Symmetry and Asymmetry (on loan)
  • Ferris Wheel Press Brush in Printmaker’s Teal
  • Graf Intuition Platino
  • Waterman Carene

…which have pushed me once again past the end of my main pen tray….

I’m still enjoying the M1005. Getting lots of use.

Aurora Oceano Pacifico

Crazy double-broad nib, currently inked with Birmingham Winter Snowflake.

I had my eye on this pen for a long time. It’s compact like other Auroras, but with a lot of silver so it has more heft. The nib looks a little less than perfect at the tipping end, but it writes beautifully. Very pleased that my Nettuno has a companion.

Pelikan M805 Ocean Swirl

Extra fine nib, currently inked with Sailor Studio 140.

I swapped back in my old “EF” (more like a medium), and I’ve been using the Ocean Swirl much more.

Aurora 88 Nettuno

Home-ground italic nib, currently inked with Pure Pens Celtic Sea.

Ferris Wheel Press Brush

Medium nib, currently inked with Ferris Wheel Press Bluegrass Velvet.

I’ve never seen a pen like this. Beautiful colour, elegant tapered shape, engraved brass section, and that distinctive brass nut as a cap band. I fear it’s too small and slim for me, but I’m enjoying it. Look out for a review soon.

Kasama Una Ultem

Broad nib, currently inked with Montblanc Golden Yellow.

Namiki Yukari Royale Urushi 20 Vermillion

Medium nib, currently inked with Birmingham Truss Blue.

Pilot Custom Urushi Vermillion

Fine/medium nib, currently inked with TWSBI Orange.

This is the biggest pen I’ve ever used. Yet the nib is fine and agile. I can’t quite get my head around it.

Visconti Medici

Rose gold medium nib, currently inked with Montblanc Chine Red.

Nakaya 17mm Portable Cigar Toki-Tamenuri

Gold soft medium, currently inked with Birmingham Alternator Crimson.

Now my only Nakaya. I’m that committed to it.

Desiderata Soubriquet Cocobolo Mk1 (and Mk2!)

0.6mm stub and fine, both currently inked with Birmingham Allegheny Observatory Celestial Blue.

I have two Soubriquets in cocobolo with mix and matched caps. Both a joy to write with.

Thanks for joining me on this epic tour… see you for the next one!

Ever tried a Caran d’Ache or a Dupont? They don’t tend to get the love they deserve, partly because they’re metal and maybe mostly because they’re expensive. But nibs, esp on Duponts tend to be v nice. Given you like GvFC, might be something to try…

I have thought about a Leman, but they’re a bit pricey to try on a whim. And I’ve looked at ST DuPont but again, expensive for a first dabble with a brand, and I’ve found myself getting confused by the sizes and naming 😂. I will look again!
