A long road led to the Fedex man knocking at my door this week with a package from Pelikan, containing the M1005 Stresemann special edition.
To understand why this was a big event for me, we have to go back to July 2017, when I picked up an M1000 in classic black, with a super-juicy,… Continue reading
Month: September 2019 (Page 2 of 3)
In November 2016 I bought a Lamy 2000, with medium nib, on sale at WH Smith. I think it cost me £90, which seemed like a lot at the time.
That pen is still with me today. It has seen heavy use, although less now that I have 30 other pens — some ten times… Continue reading
It won’t be a surprise to you that I’m a Nakaya fan. I think I’ve made my feelings about Nakaya pretty clear already.
When I wrote that post I owned two Nakayas: a Decapod Writer in Heki-Tamenuri, and a Long Cigar in Kuro-Tamenuri.
I recently bought a third, and it’s a rare beast.
It’s a Portable… Continue reading

Loving reading the updates from this pen maker. I really enjoy getting a behind-the-scenes view from craftspeople. (I’m also queueing up videos like this Montegrappa behind-the-scenes and Graf interview from Appelboom)
I reinked my Pelikan M805 with italic broad with Sailor Studio 140 last week, only to see a review pop up on the… Continue reading
I have a guilty secret. I have even more pens in my collection than I show in my SotC posts.
First are the cheap pens that I’ve foisted on my eldest daughter. A slew of TWSBI Ecos in beautiful colours that I keep wanting to write with. A Kaweco Perkeo. Kaco Retro. Muji aluminium. Lamy… Continue reading
It wasn’t that long ago that Tomoe River was a niche thing, that you had to work hard to get hold of. Fortunately, that’s no longer the case, and you have plenty of choice, wherever in the world you live. I thought it would be worth quickly summarising those options. Here goes. Note that I’m… Continue reading
Until a few weeks ago I’d not heard of Leonard Slattery Pens, but I’m glad I stumbled across his work.
Leonard’s a craftsman based in Ireland creating wooden pens in unusual designs. Wooden pens are not that common anyway (Graf, Ryan Krusac, Desiderata…?), but here the sections are wooden too. Wood is a uniquely tactile… Continue reading
A day early for Uncapped this week — I gotta keep you on your toes, right?

It looks like there’s a new Platinum RED version of Montblanc’s M. Hideously expensive (£1,200) and in my opinion has lost the appeal of the M’s design…
More reviews rolling in on the Vertex. I personally haven’t experienced… Continue reading
On Wednesday evening Franklin-Christoph sent me an email announcing the beta test of its new Shopify-based website.
I quickly take a look on my phone and see a short run of the Pocket 66 model in solid ice. Since I’d been mulling ordering another F-C pen anyway, and the Pocket 66 is no longer a… Continue reading
There’s a lot to like about Oldwin’s Classic. The fact that these pens are handmade from interesting materials in Paris. The seamless, streamlined shape, with the cap threads right on the end of the barrel. The huge gold nib and ebonite feed.
Maybe that explains why I bought another, after the troubles I had with… Continue reading
